This character was a Confederate military officer in the American Civil War, governor of North Carolina, and the United States senator. Prolific writer, Vance became one of the most influential southern leaders of the Civil War and later periods.

Vance was the leader of the "New South" and he contributed to the rapid modernization of the economy of the South, the expansion of the railroad, the construction of schools and the reconciliation with the North.
