█ The Collegiate Church

Continue on down the street of the Synagogue and as soon as you can, turn left to keep going along Tetuan Street. On your left you will soon see the
church of Saint María de la Candelaria.
The church was built to replace the old church which was previously in the nearby Plaza Grande (Large Square). Work began in 1527 and ended twenty years later, although construction work went on until the end of the 16th century.
In the temple's interior, highlights incude the wonderful
High alterpiece, the alterpiece by
Zurbarán, the alterpiece of the
Virgen del Carmen, the Chapel of the
Virgen de la Valvanera and the
church organ.
On the left of the main door, beneath the imposing belltower, we can see the granite
coat of arms of the Suárez de Figueroa family. This coat of arms contains one element repeated five times, and the name of the element will allow you to continue on your way.
